Good outdoor lighting transforms how a property looks and how it is used. It makes a garden usable after dark, gives a driveway or path a safe route to the door, picks out architectural features that would otherwise disappear at night, and adds a genuine layer of security.
ATO Solutions designs and installs outdoor lighting for homes and businesses across Wimbledon and the wider South West London area. Based in Wimbledon, SW19, our NICEIC-registered electricians have over 17 years’ experience — and outdoor electrical work, done properly, requires considerably more care than most people expect.
Outdoor Lighting We Install
Garden and landscape lighting
Uplighters, spike lights, and subtle lighting for planting, trees, and features — bringing a garden to life after dark without flooding it with light.
Path, step, and driveway lighting
Low-level lighting that makes routes safe to navigate at night, including recessed step lights, bollard lighting, and driveway markers.
Security lighting
PIR motion-activated floodlights and sensor lighting, positioned to cover approaches and entry points effectively — without irritating you or your neighbours every time a cat walks past.
Wall and façade lighting
Wall lights, up-and-down lighters, and lighting that picks out the architectural features of the building itself. Particularly effective on the period properties common across South West London.
Patio, decking, and entertaining areas
Lighting that makes outdoor spaces genuinely usable in the evening, whether for a domestic garden or a commercial terrace.
Commercial exterior lighting
Car parks, entrances, signage lighting, and external premises lighting for businesses, including emergency and safety lighting where required.
Lighting Design — Getting the Scheme Right
The difference between outdoor lighting that works and outdoor lighting that doesn’t is rarely the fittings. It is the scheme.
Badly planned outdoor lighting tends to fall into two traps: too much light, flattening everything into a glare, or lights pointed in the wrong places, creating hotspots and dark patches. Good outdoor lighting is layered — a mix of low-level path lighting, focused accent lighting on features, and broader illumination where it is genuinely needed — with the light sources themselves largely hidden from view.
We take the time to understand what you want the space to feel like and how you actually use it, then design a scheme around that. It costs no more to plan it properly, and the difference is considerable.
Why Outdoor Electrical Work Needs a Qualified Electrician
This is the part that matters, and it is where a great deal of outdoor lighting goes wrong.
Anything electrical installed outside is permanently exposed to rain, damp, frost, and temperature swings. Water and electricity are a genuinely dangerous combination, and outdoor installations must be built to cope with conditions that indoor fittings never face. That means:
- Correctly IP-rated fittings — every outdoor fitting has an IP rating indicating its resistance to water and dust ingress. A fitting suitable for a sheltered porch is not necessarily suitable for an exposed garden bed.
- Properly protected cabling — outdoor cable must be armoured or otherwise mechanically protected, buried at the correct depth, and routed to avoid damage from digging, mowers, and ground movement.
- RCD protection — all outdoor circuits require RCD protection, which cuts the power within milliseconds if a fault develops. This is the single most important safety measure for exterior electrics.
- Correct earthing and bonding — particularly important for metal fittings and structures outdoors.
Outdoor electrical work is also notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, meaning it must either be carried out by a registered competent person or submitted to your local authority for inspection. As a NICEIC-registered contractor, we self-certify our work and issue the appropriate certificate on completion — so you have documented proof that the installation is safe and compliant.
It is worth being blunt: a cheap outdoor lighting installation that skips these measures is not a bargain. It is a fault waiting to develop, in the one place where a fault is most likely to be dangerous.
Energy-Efficient Outdoor Lighting
Outdoor lighting can run for many hours a night, so efficiency matters more here than almost anywhere else in a property. Modern LED fittings draw a fraction of the power of traditional lamps and last considerably longer — which is worth having when the fitting is buried in a flowerbed or mounted three metres up a wall.
We can also incorporate controls that reduce running costs further: timers, dusk-to-dawn photocells that switch lighting automatically with the light level, and motion sensors that only bring lights to full output when someone is actually there. Where it suits the project, outdoor lighting can also be integrated into a smart lighting system for app control and scheduling. → Smart Lighting
How We Work
We start by understanding what you want the lighting to achieve — atmosphere, security, safety, or a combination — and looking at the space itself. From there we recommend a scheme, explain the options, and give you a clear quote before any work begins.
Once agreed, we handle the full installation: cabling, fittings, controls, and any switching or automation. On completion, we test the installation, issue your certificate, and walk you through how everything works.
